How Does an All-In-One Heat Pump Work?
The Neopower Black Shield uses advanced heat pump technology to extract heat from the surrounding air and transfer it to your water tank — delivering hot water with a rated heating capacity of 3kW and a COP of 5.4, at a fraction of the energy cost.
Air Absorption
The fan draws ambient air over the evaporator coil, where the R290 natural refrigerant absorbs heat energy — operating effectively in temperatures from -7°C to 46°C.
Compression
The DC inverter compressor pressurises the refrigerant gas with a rated input of just 0.556kW, dramatically increasing its temperature while consuming minimal electricity.
Heat Transfer
The superheated refrigerant passes through the condenser coil wrapped around the water tank, transferring 3kW of heating capacity to the stored water.
Hot Water Ready
Choose from multiple modes — Standard, Eco, or Hybrid (with the 1.6kW back-up E-heater). The built-in Sterilization Mode heats water to 60°C–70°C to eliminate bacteria.

What Our Customers Say
Real reviews from verified Australian customers on ProductReview.com.au
Me and my partner bought this heat pump last December, and it has been great. Our last heat pump was very noisy, this one's pretty quiet. We use midday offpeak hours to heat up the water, 210L is more than enough for the both of us. Overall a good buy.
We've been using the Neopower 210L heat pump for about 2 months now, and it's working really well. It heats up in around 1.5 hours and provides more than enough hot water for our family of three. We've noticed our electricity bill drop by almost 30% since switching over.
Excellent end to end service & product. Digital panel to set the desired temperature. Enough capacity to accommodate 5 people showering consecutively. Hot water runs in quickly. Very happy with everything.
Happy for the replacement and service from them. Gas really reduce from 1m³/day to 1m³/week. Thanks Zayn and your team.
Since installing the Neopower heat pump hot water system, our household's quality of life has really improved! This system is incredibly energy-efficient, and we've seen a noticeable drop in our electricity bills. It operates so quietly that we hardly notice it's on.
They provided exceptional customer service, patiently explaining the product and recommending the perfect system for my house. The installer was also professional, completing the installation efficiently. Both the product and the service exceeded my expectations. Highly recommend.
When I called David, instead of rushing to sell me the product, he was really patient to introduce the product, how good the energy saving is and recommended all the systems that fit my house. The installer Matthew is really really good too.

With a COP of 5.4, the Black Shield produces 3kW of heating from just 0.556kW of electrical input — using significantly less energy than traditional electric or gas hot water systems. Actual dollar savings depend on your location, household size, hot water usage, electricity tariff, and the system you're replacing. Contact us for a personalised savings estimate based on your specific circumstances.
Yes. The Black Shield operates in ambient temperatures from -7°C to +46°C, covering all Australian climate zones. The DC inverter compressor adjusts its speed continuously for stable performance without inefficient stop-start cycling. In extreme conditions, the 1.6kW back-up electric element activates automatically in Hybrid mode to ensure consistent hot water delivery.
The Black Shield qualifies for federal Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) across all of Australia — the value varies by zone and model. Additional state programs include Victoria's Solar Homes rebate (up to $1,000–$1,400), NSW Energy Savings Scheme, SA REPS, and ACT Sustainable Household Scheme. Rebate values and eligibility change — always confirm with the relevant official government program before purchasing.
The Black Shield features a silent mode operating at 42 dBa — comparable to a quiet library. The DC inverter compressor ramps up and down gradually rather than switching on and off abruptly, which eliminates the harsh start-up surges common in non-inverter heat pumps.
Yes. With a rated input power of just 0.556kW, most rooftop solar PV systems can easily power the Black Shield during the day. Use the built-in timer function via the Smart Life app or the LCD controller to schedule heating during peak solar production hours to maximise self-consumption.
The Black Shield offers four operating modes: Standard Mode (normal heat pump operation), Eco Mode (maximises energy efficiency), Hybrid Mode (heat pump + 1.6kW back-up E-heater for faster recovery), and Sterilization Mode (automatically heats water to 60°C–70°C to eliminate bacteria such as Legionella). You can also manually initiate a Forced Defrost cycle if heavy frost builds up on the evaporator.
A split system heat pump has a separate outdoor compressor and indoor storage tank, while an all-in-one unit like the Black Shield integrates the compressor on top of the tank in a single unit. The all-in-one design offers a smaller footprint, simpler installation with less pipework, and a lower total cost. The Black Shield achieves a COP of 5.4 with its DC inverter compressor. The Black Shield is available in three models: NA43-210B (210L) for 1–3 people, NA44-270B (270L) for 3–5 people, and NA45-320B (320L) for 5+ people. The right size depends on your household's daily hot water usage, number of bathrooms, and peak demand patterns. Contact our team for a personalised recommendation.
R290 (propane) is a natural refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 3, compared to 1,430 for the older synthetic R134a. It delivers excellent heat transfer efficiency and has zero ozone depletion potential. R290 is classified as a Class 3 flammable gas, which is why the manual requires that it must only be handled by a technician with an appropriate Australian refrigeration license. Learn more about heat pump technology →
The Black Shield must be installed by licensed tradespeople in compliance with AS/NZS 3500.4 (plumbing) and AS/NZS 3000 (wiring). It requires a level concrete plinth supporting over 400kg, a dedicated 220–240V/50Hz circuit with a 10A breaker, and a certified tempering valve set to 50°C. Minimum clearances are: top ≥100mm, air outlet ≥600mm, air inlet ≥150mm, behind unit >10mm. If installed indoors, minimum room volumes apply (35m³ for 210L, 55m³ for 270L, 75m³ for 320L). Victorian installations require a licensed installer with a VBA Compliance Certificate. Find a qualified installer through our national distributor network.
Solar thermal systems (like flat panel or evacuated tube) heat water directly using sunlight and require roof-mounted collectors. The Black Shield extracts heat from ambient air, works in all weather conditions from -7°C to +46°C, and has no roof panels. For homes with existing rooftop solar PV, pairing a heat pump with your PV system is generally more cost-effective — the Black Shield only draws 0.556kW, which most solar systems can easily cover.
Per the manufacturer's maintenance schedule: every 6 months, gently operate the PTR valve lever to ensure it is not blocked. Every 5 years, replace the sacrificial magnesium anodes and clean the inner tank and E-heater. The unit's warranty may be voided if water quality exceeds specified limits — Total Dissolved Solids must be under 600 mg/L, Total Hardness under 200 mg/L, pH between 6.5–8.5, and Chloride under 300 mg/L. Unfiltered bore, dam, or river water will void the warranty.
The Black Shield comes with a 7-year warranty on the tank and 5 years on all other components. The warranty requires that the unit is installed by licensed tradespeople per the manufacturer's instructions, on a level surface (tilt must not exceed 3°), and that the water supply meets specified quality limits. For full warranty terms, refer to the product manual or contact our team.
